UNE FEMME MARIÉE

!
Rated: M
Actors: Philippe Leroy, Bernard Noel
Director: Jean-Luc Godard
Distributor: Madman
Release Year: 19/08/2009
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles
In UNE FEMME MARIÉE Godard turns his socio-political lens on the dehumanising institution of marriage in his examination of an adulterous woman. The original title, THE MARRIED WOMAN, caused outrage in France, where it was seen as Godard's indictment of all married women as opposed to one isolated case.

Charlotte (played by the luminous Macha Méril) is the middle-class wife of aviator Pierre, though she is sleeping with budding actor Robert. Through Charlotte, in several vignettes, Godard showcases a married woman's passion, intelligence, beauty, hidden desires and loneliness to create a distinctly critical view of the alienating effects of marriage. Godard introduces us to Charlotte in a strangely fragmented way, focusing his camera on isolated female body parts—the small of her back, the graceful arc of her neck, the curve of a hip—to indicate her representation not as a singular character but as an archetype of all women. Thus, despite being forced to change his title, the meaning has remained.

Godard’s picture captures a moment in time. In spite of this, all its mysteries, its truths, its beauty, comedy and grace, serve to resolve into a work of art for the ages.

FIST NAME : CARMEN

!
Rated: R18+
Actors: Maruschka etmers, Jacques Bonnaffe
Director: Jean-Luc Godard
Distributor: Universal
Release Year: 1983
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles
First Name: Carmen tells the parallel stories of a quartet rehearsing Beethoven and a group of young people robbing a bank, supposedly to get the funds to make a film. The film is a meditation on the difficulties of youth in the 1980s, the relations between cinema and capital, and how to film the human body. Godard fills the film with carefully composed shots of bodies playing music, making love, and acting violently. His attention to bodies in First Name: Carmen makes the film's images very close to sculptures, particularly those of Rodin. The film's engagement with painting and sculpture continues Godard's ongoing investigation of the relationships between cinema and other arts

A WOMAN IS A WOMAN

Actors: Jean Paul Belmondo, Jean-Claude Brialy, Anna Karina
Director: Jean-Luc Godard
Distributor: Universal
Release Year: 1961
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles
Director Jean-Luc Godard's deceptively blithe tribute to the musical comedy features Anna Karina as an exotic dancer who decides that it is time for her to have a child. When her lover refuses to commit to the decision, she turns her romantic attentions to his best friend. This being a Godard film, the straightforward story serves as a framework for improvisation and stylistic experimentation, allowing for odd interludes and unexpected images. Rather than the sometimes alienating, dense intellectualism of later Godard works, Une femme est une femme offers aesthetic pleasure through luxurious visuals and a charming musical score by Michel Legrand.

BANDE A PART

bande a part
Rated: M15+
Genre: Movie-Foreign
Label: UMBRELLA ENTERTAINMENT
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles

Described by the Village Voice as "a proto-slacker mood piece...more Renoir than Fuller-the least preoccupied with American culture of any of Godard's '60s films", Bande a Part (Band of Outsiders) is the great French director's classic tale of disaffected youth in suburban Paris.

Namesake for Quentin Tarantino's production company (Band a Part also inspired the famous dance sequence in Pulp Fiction), the film is lesser known than Godard's Breathless, yet was more groundbreaking, pioneering daring cinematic devices that have become commonplace today.

A simple story about two young delinquents (Franz and Arthur) who befriend a young girl, Odile (Anna Karina), and conpire to commit a robbery, Band a Part is best remembered for its quirky set pieces: the celebrated mad dash through the Louvre; Arthur and Franz reading aloud from a daily tabloid, one crime story after another, ending with an account of tribal slaughter in Rwanda. And of course, there's the sequence where Odile, Franz, and Arthur dance the Madison in a half-empty café.

With Masculin féminin , ruthless stylist and iconoclast Jean-Luc Godard introduces the world to "the children of Marx and Coa-Cola," through a gang of restless youths engaged in hopeless love affairs with music, revolution, and each other. French new wave icon Jean-Pierre Léaud stars as Paul, an idealistic would-be intellectual struggling to forge a relationship with the adorable pop star Madeleine (real-life yé yé girl Chantal Goya). Through their tempestuous affair, Godard fashions a candid and wildy funny free-form examination of youth culture in throbbing 1960s Paris, mixing satire and tragedy as only Godard can.

Jacques Tati, master of his own idiosyncratic genre of cinematic slapstick, followed up his acclaimed debut JOUR DE FETE with the equally ingenious MR. HULOT'S HOLIDAY. Five years in the making, the film marks the debut of Tati's altar ego, Mr. Hulot, a gangly and awkward Frenchman, perpetually the center and possible cause of a whirlwind of disasters, pratfalls, and mishaps. Tati's scrupulous attention to detail and almost arabesque sense of humor colors the entire film, from the departure of a gaggle of tourists from a malfunctioning train station to the minutiae of resort life. In place of a plot, a series of disastrous coincidences, surreal sight gags and irascible indignations erupt around Mr. Hulot as he gallantly and obliviously strolls through his seaside vacation. While he tries to impress a lovely ingenue, Hulot inadvertently barges in on a funeral, ignites a fireworks stand with his pipe, and topples a Ming vase, rarely realizing the extent of the damage he causes. Tati expertly crafts the visual bombast of traditional slapstick into a beautiful and intricate sequence of incidents, accompanied by an equally elegant and intriguing seaside soundtrack of lapping waves, laughing children and transistor radios, all merging into an absurd symphony of cinematic delight.

Jean Cocteau's interpretation of the classic fairy tale story of the beautiful young girl who sees the true loneliness of the disfigured beast is much more than a children's story. Illustrating the tale with live-action and fantastic prosthetics for Jean Marais as the Beast, Cocteau's vision is of a very adult dream world, in which the young girl cures the hideously disformed prince of his monstrous curse, demonstrating the awesome power of love.
