In this companion to My Father's Glory, renowned French author Marcel Pagnol's memoirs of childhood continue to captivate.

Devastated at having to leave the wondrous hills of Provence where his family had spent the summer, Marcel is elated when they return for Christmas and then Easter. Before long they are heading for their rural retreat every weekend, and the long journey there soon brings its own adventure.

As Marcel's affectionate reminiscences draw to a close, we are left with a wonderfully poignant conclusion to these classics of modern French cinema.

In THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT, the follow up to the revolutionary UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG (1963), director Jacques Demy continues his experiments with narrative and the musical form, as well as his collaboration with composer Michel Legrand. Characters meet, story lines cross, families expand and all is expressed in booming song, exploding color, and elegant choreography. Catherine Deneuve and her real life sister, Francoise Dorleac play sisters who run a music and ballet school and in their spare time seek love and adventure. Their Mother runs a café in the Town Square which is the eye of the romantic and dramatic storm that runs through the film. A young sailor mopes at the café dreaming of an ideal love, a local music merchant regrets his lost love, a carnival enters town and two of its members convince the sisters to put on a spectacle. Gene Kelley makes an appearance, as do elements from many Hollywood musicals, added in pastiche. As the film reaches a hysterical and breakneck pace, lovers are lost and found, separated and reunited and the glittering, pastel glamour of the town of Rochefort plays a starring role. Love's endurance and the persistence of chance reign as the ridiculous and the sublime combine to create a cinematic experience unlike any other.

Geneviève, 17, lives with her widowed mother, who owns an umbrella shop in Cherbourg. She and Guy, a twenty-year-old auto mechanic, are secretly in love and want to marry, but when she reveals this to her mother, her mother objects on the grounds that Geneviève is too young and Guy is not mature or well-established enough, particularly since he has not yet done his required military service. Shortly after this, Guy is drafted to serve in the war in Algeria. Before he leaves, he and Geneviève consummate their love for each other, which results in her becoming pregnant. While Guy is away they drift apart, and Geneviève, strongly encouraged by her mother, accepts a marriage proposal from a well-to-do gem dealer named Roland Cassard, who has fallen in love with her at first sight and has promised to bring up her child as his own. (The character of Cassard is continued from Demy's earlier film 'Lola' (1961).) Guy is wounded and is discharged before his two-year term is up, but when he returns to Cherbourg Geneviève has already married and moved away. He struggles with depression and anger, but eventually is healed by falling in love with and marrying Madeleine, a young woman who had been caring for his now-deceased aunt Élise. Using an inheritance from his aunt, Guy fulfills his ambition of opening a service station. Years later, the now conspicuously wealthy Geneviève, traveling with her son, Guy's child, accidentally meet Guy at his service station. While the two have only a brief conversation about the state of their respective lives, the conversation is clearly fraught with unspoken fondness and regret.

Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali's unfathomable short from 1929 is a masterpiece of filmmaking guile and audacity, a shocking celluloid dreamscape that destroyed film convention with bizarre images that still resonate today.

The film opens with a young Buñuel sharpening a knife, a cloud cutting the moon in the night sky, the said knife slicing a women's tender eyeball before shots of gaping, ant ridden hands and mouths stuffed with armpit hair push the film beyond its surrealist limits. Young subversives hoping to influence Paris's ruling artistic elite, Buñuel and Dalí got more than they bargained for when their film redefined the entire movement.

Proudly presented for the first time on DVD in Australia, this art film masterwork is accompanied by a host of very special features, including two documentaries on the artistic life of Luis Buñuel and Savador Dali.

Godard's brilliant dialectical farce, distinctly disquieting as well as gratingly funny, in which five Parisian students, members of a Maoist cell, discuss the implications of the Chinese cultural revolution and the chances of using terrorism to effect a similar upheaval in the West. Dazzlingly designed as a collage of slogans and poster images, it was widely attacked at the time for playing with politics. But Godard was well aware what he was doing creating these 'Robinson Crusoes with Marxism as their Man Friday', and his film stands as a prophetic and remarkably acute analysis of the impulse behind the events of May 1968 in all their desperate sincerity and impossible naïveté.

UNE FEMME MARIÉE

Rated: M
Actors: Philippe Leroy, Bernard Noel
Director: Jean-Luc Godard
Distributor: Madman
Release Year: 19/08/2009
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles
In UNE FEMME MARIÉE Godard turns his socio-political lens on the dehumanising institution of marriage in his examination of an adulterous woman. The original title, THE MARRIED WOMAN, caused outrage in France, where it was seen as Godard's indictment of all married women as opposed to one isolated case.

Charlotte (played by the luminous Macha Méril) is the middle-class wife of aviator Pierre, though she is sleeping with budding actor Robert. Through Charlotte, in several vignettes, Godard showcases a married woman's passion, intelligence, beauty, hidden desires and loneliness to create a distinctly critical view of the alienating effects of marriage. Godard introduces us to Charlotte in a strangely fragmented way, focusing his camera on isolated female body parts—the small of her back, the graceful arc of her neck, the curve of a hip—to indicate her representation not as a singular character but as an archetype of all women. Thus, despite being forced to change his title, the meaning has remained.

Godard’s picture captures a moment in time. In spite of this, all its mysteries, its truths, its beauty, comedy and grace, serve to resolve into a work of art for the ages.

Actors: Maruschka etmers, Jacques Bonnaffe

Release Year: 1983
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles
First Name: Carmen tells the parallel stories of a quartet rehearsing Beethoven and a group of young people robbing a bank, supposedly to get the funds to make a film. The film is a meditation on the difficulties of youth in the 1980s, the relations between cinema and capital, and how to film the human body. Godard fills the film with carefully composed shots of bodies playing music, making love, and acting violently. His attention to bodies in First Name: Carmen makes the film's images very close to sculptures, particularly those of Rodin. The film's engagement with painting and sculpture continues Godard's ongoing investigation of the relationships between cinema and other arts
