TINTIN AND I

!
Rated: G
Distributor: Madman
Format: PAL, colour
Running Time: 74 minutes
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles
Meet the man behind the masterpiece

Based on a grave conversation Herge had in 1971, during several days, with Numa Sadoul, who was still a student at the time. During the course of the interview, Herge points out how the allusions and the underlying psychology of Tintin were intimately related to the tensions of his private life.

The interviews, of which 14 hours of original audio material have been preserved, constitute the backbone of this documentary. The film is an epic biography, built around the recordings by Numa Sadoul (actor and writer). It takes an especially close look at the link between the comics created by Herge and a man's need for artistic expression. Tintin Et Moi hands the floor over to the vanished artist, who traces his own portrait.

THE MAGNIFICENT TATI

!
Rated: G
Director: Michael House
Distributor: Madman
Release Year: 2011
Region 4 DVD - In English and French, with English subtitles
Jacque Tati, France's unique master of comedy film, was a loner and did not belong to any school except his own. He kept his distance from other directors and from ideas like the cinéma d'auteur. Yet his four main features (Jour de Fête, Les vacances de M Hulot, Mon Oncle and Playtime), made with meticulous care between 1947 and 1968, were created almost entirely by him, as writer, director and star. Tati invites you to see not the comedian, but comedy itself. That explains why he's given us the adjective tatiesque to describe the delicious absurdity of people behaving...well, as they do!

Director Michael House explores the life and work of the magnificent Tati through clips and interviews with those who know his work best. Tati is followed from his origins as a mime on the Parisian music-hall stage to his Oscar-winning Mon Oncle, and the tells how Tati lost it all on his masterpiece Playtime. The film culminates with clips of contemporary artists paying tribute to the great man's work. Featured are: Sylvian Chomet whose The Illusionist is a homage to Tati, Mike Mills, Frank Black, Professor David Bellos, Marie-France Siegler, Stéphane Goudet, Gamarjobat, Craig McCracken, Sparks, macha Make eff, Professor Martine Beugnet, mime artists Steven Wasson and Corinne Soum and Tati himself.

Director: Pierre Thoretton
Featuring: Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Bergé, Loulou de la Falaise
Distributor: Hopscotch
Format: PAL, colour
Running Time: 104 minutes
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles

L'amour Fou is a stunning, intimate and deeply moving portrait of two great men, their love and their legacy.

Fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent met businessman Pierre Bergé at Christian Dior's funeral in 1957. What resulted was a relationship that would span five decades and one that would revolutionise the fashion world and indelibly change the way women dressed.
After resigning his position as the head of the House of Dior, the precocious Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Bergé went on to found the House of Yves Saint Laurent in 1962. It was a label that soon became synonymous with style, elegance and innovation.
As YSL trail blazed through the fashion world, Bergé acted as CEO of the company. Throughout their partnership, they were avid collectors of art, spending a large portion of their wealth amassing a collection that would rival the best galleries, featuring works by Picasso, Matisse and Brancusi to name just a few.
Upon Laurent's death in 2008 Bergé decided to sell the couple's beloved collection. It is through this momentous auction, and using rare archival footage as well as interviews with those closest to him that the film beautifully depicts the incredible life of this fashion icon and the relationship between these two remarkable men.

L'amour Fou is a wonderful tribute to beauty, elegance, decadence and a man who so perfectly captured all these things.

From now on they will be able to think for themselves! With their unusual expressions, their emotions and their contradictions, the children are the beneficiaries of an innovative experiment. Just A Beginning is the fabulous true story of a school with an eye on the future.

LAGERFELD CONFIDENTIAL

Director: Rodolphe Marconi
Distributor: Hopscotch
Format: PAL, colour
Running Time: 87 minutes
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles
Lagerfeld Confidential takes you behind the sunglass-clad façade and into the everyday world of fashion's most iconic designer, the master of re-invention, Karl Lagerfeld.

Award-winning French director Roldolphe Marconi's unique and unobtrusive style of portraiture, exposes Lagerfeld's trademark: an all-consuming creative restlessness and insatiable curiosity about the world of art, history, politics, music and fashion. The decisively unsentimental designer not only accepts but thrives upon the fickle and frivolous nature of his industry where attachment equates to stagnation - fashion is a moment in time that must be ever-changing.

Few people have been able to maintain such a sustained level of excitement in the fashion industry as Lagerfeld who commands the kind of fame usually reserved for the supermodels and movie stars who adorn his social life.

Lagerfeld's public and private worlds are skilfully contrasted: from his single-handed reinvention and revitalisation of Chanel, to glamorous Parisian catwalks, media launches with Nicole Kidman and Baz Luhrman and intimate lunches with Princess Caroline of Monaco, to his ease as an illustrator, his pleasure in photography, his family history, love of solitude and much prided library and art collections.

Lagerfeld Confidential is a complex human portrait of a man who desires to be "like an apparition" but who paradoxically has made and continues to make an indelible imprint in fashion and popular culture alike.

The Friendship that Defined French Cinema

Comprised of rarely-seen archival footage and interviews with Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, Two in the Wave is the story of a unique and ultimately destructive friendship.

Jean-Luc Godard was born in 1930; Francois Truffaut two years later. Love of movies brings them together. They write in the same magazines, Cahiers du Cinema and Arts . When the younger of the two becomes a filmmaker with The 400 Blows , which triumphs in Cannes in 1959, he helps his older friend shift to directing, offering him the screenplay for what would become Godard's triumphant debut, Breathless . Through the 1960s the two loyally support each other but, in 1968, they are torn apart when Godard plunges into radical politics while Truffaut continues his career as before. Between the two of them, the actor Jean-Pierre Léaud is torn like a child caught between two separated and warring parents. This is the story of the French New Wave.

A journey into the depths of the ocean, Atlantis is director Luc Besson’s triumphal, awe-inspiring celebration of the beauty and wonder of the world beneath the sea. Divided into thematic movements and akin to a great marine Baraka , it serves not so much as a documentary than as a meditative journey into the big blue. Thrilling, lyrical and mysterious, Atlantis transports us to a world beyond words, the savagery and beauty of which will haunt your memory long after the film ends.

LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS & LE MEPRIS
Rated: PG
Distributor: SBS
Format: PAL
Running Time: 104 minutes
Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles

Behind the scenes of classic films, and the era in which they were created.

Children of Paradise (Les enfants du paradis)
Regularly voted as the finest French film ever made, and one of the top three films of all time, "Les Enfants du Paradis" is a magical, yet somewhat black piece of escapism set in nineteenth century Paris, a deeply romantic and theatrical tour-de-force. The film was made by Marcel Carné and Jacques Prévert in 1943 during the golden age of French cinema under the occupation. French legends, Arletty, Jean-Louis Barrault and and Pierre Brasseur feature through archive interviews along with original contributions from Bertrand Tavernier, Edward Turk and others.

Contempt (Le Mépris)
At the height of the French New Wave, director Jean-Luc Godard procured Brigitte Bardot for a big-budget film which was not quite what the investors were expecting. Filmed in lavish Cinemascope and Technicolor, but often shot with a handheld camera, the film pushed boundaries and appalled traditionalists.

The documentary places the film within its era, as French society is in turmoil at the end of the Algerian war of independence and the movie industry is in crisis. Godard hires Fritz Lang as the old hero of art-house films, forced to direct gladiator movies for an unscrupulous Hollywood producer. Features extensive contributions from Godard and Michel Piccoli and archive interviews with Bardot and Fritz Lang.

Region 4 DVD - In French, with English subtitles

1974. 1350 feet up. The artistic crime of the century.

A daredevil, a maverick, a dreamer, an artist: Philippe Petit is all of these things and more. On a slightly windy day in the summer of 1974, a lone figure appeared high above the heads of the people of Manhattan, balancing perfectly on a high wire strung between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. For almost an hour, the performer danced on the wire, ignoring the pleas from police to get down, simply rejoicing in his artistic expression. This "coup" marked the culmination of several months of planning, during which Petit and his rag-tag bunch of conspirators would become implicated in a feat considered "the artistic crime of the century".

MAN ON WIRE is a spectacle of human achievement, tenacity and sheer amazement, in which archival footage and dramatic re-enactment are used to tell the story of Petit and his rebellious team of artistic innovators.
