Format: Paperback Book

Author: Pamela Lyon
Publisher: Penguin Books
Date Published: 26/07/1973

Originally written to entertain, move or chill, the eight short stories in this collection accompanied by parallel English translations now also help students gain deeper insights into French literature and life. Arranged in approximate order of difficulty, the range of stories is wide, from the stylized wit of Raymond Queneau to the beautifully written ambiguities of Philippe Sollers, from Pierre Gascar's exploration of childhood as a background to a tale of infidelity to Henri Thomas' gentle, ironic look at war. All make wonderful reads in either language.

These eight stories, by leading French writers of this century, are accompanied by a parallel English text and explanations of the less familiar French phrases, making them valuable for both English students of French and French students of English.Among the diverse and entertaining stories in this collection is the wistful masterpiece Green Tobacco by Claire Sainte-Soline, the exuberant tales of The Ants by the post-war king of cafe society Boris Vian, and the lucid realism of writers such as C. F. Ramuz (The dead man's return) and Andre de Mandiargues (Sabine).Together the stories are a fascinating insight into the quality of French life and literature.

CHÉRI

!

AUTHOR: Colette

Widely considered the author's best work, this story of a love affair between Lea, a still-beautiful 49-year-old ex-courtesan, and Cheri, a handsome but selfish young man 30 years her junior, is a superb study of age and sexuality. While the theme of a young man who deserts his older mistress is a familiar one, in this novel, Colette makes it her own. Introduction, Notes, and new English translation by Stanley Appelbaum.

THE IMMORALIST - L'IMMORALISTE

!

AUTHOR: André Gide

One of Andre Gide's best-known works, "The Immoralist (written in 1901, published in 1902) concerns the unhappy consequences of amoral hedonism, telling the story of a man who travels through Europe and North Africa and attempts to transcend the limitations of conventional morality by surrendering to his appetites. Notable for its fusion of autobiographical elements with both biblical and classical symbolism, this work marks a decided shift in Gide's prose style from a somewhat decadent floweriness to his later classic clarity. The author's nobility and simplicity of style is skillfully retained in this translation, which also preserves the passion and intensity of the original. Translation by Stanley Applebaum.
