An Australian-French co-production starring world-renowned French actress/singer Charlotte Gainsbourg and directed by award-winning French filmmaker Julie Bertuccelli (Since Otar Left), The Tree tells the life-affirming story of a family coming to terms with the unexpected death of their father.
Produced by Perth’s Sue Taylor and based on Judy Pascoe’s moving debut novel Our father who art in the tree (french title: L'arbre du père) The Tree offers a rich, lyrical exploration of the concepts of loss, faith, home, and family.
Beautiful and thought-provoking, the film received a seven-minute standing ovation at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Synopsis:
After the sudden death of her father, 8-year-old Simone shares a secret with her mother Dawn. She’s convinced her father speaks to her through the leaves of her favourite tree and he’s come back to protect them. But the new bond between mother and daughter is threatened when Dawn starts a relationship with George, the plumber, called in to remove the tree’s troublesome roots. As the branches of the tree start to infiltrate the house, the family is forced to make an agonising decision. But have they left it too late?
Released in Australian cinemas on 30 September.
