Eh non ! L'éléphant n'a pas toujours été pourvu d'une trompe. Et il fut un temps où le chameau ne possédait pas de bosse, où le kangourou marchait à quatre pattes, où la peau du rhinocéros était sans plis, le pelage du léopard sans taches... Il leur a fallu, certainement, vivre de curieuses aventures pour acquérir de telles bizarreries... Dans chacun de ces huit contes devenus d'incontournables classiques, Rudyard Kipling imagine une anecdote savoureuse qui explique pourquoi certains animaux possèdent une caractéristique qui les distingue des autres. Ecrits en 1899 par l'auteur du "livre de la jungle" pour sa fille Joséphine, morte d'une pleurésie à l'âge de 8 ans, ces contes s'apparentent à la mythologie et sont pleins d'humour et de fraîcheur.
Kipling fait danser les mots de manière poétique, en invente de nouveaux nous conduisant dans un imaginaire cocasse.
Les dessins en noir et blanc, de la main même de R.Kipling, sont concentrés à la fin de chaque récit et commentés par lui-même. D'époque, ils sont peu clairs mais touchants.
