Before being caught, Ruby managed to hide a vast amount of stolen money he in turn robbed from Vogel, a dangerous criminal who killed Ruby's lover, Sandra.
Despite the fact that Ruby will have nothing to do with him, Quentin develops a deep friendship for him. Ruby manages to get transferred to the mental ward, followed by Quentin who pulls off a clumsy yet successful escape for both of them, just as Ruby is about to escape alone.
A lone wolf to begin with, Ruby is on a quest to kill Vogel and avenge Sandra's death. Suspecting Quentin of working for the police, Ruby does everything he can to ditch him, even after Quentin saves him from Vogel's thugs.
Through a vaudevillian set of circumstances, Ruby and Quentin end up dressed in fashionable women's pantsuits, trailing and being trailed by Vogel's thugs through computerized car tracking devices as they all head for Vogel's place!
But Rocco, Vogel's strongman, takes a different route which gets him stuck in traffic, and calls the police as the only way to protect his boss from Ruby's wrath. Quentin and Ruby evade the police by stealing a cop car but Ruby is shot in the process. Ruby still attempts to shake Quentin, but every time they are about to be caught, Quentin's method of knocking every one out and stealing their vehicle, be it cops or truants, prevails.
They hide out in an abandoned bistro where Quentin tries to convince Ruby not to go through with his plan to kill Vogel but to open a bistro with him instead. Ruby won't hear of it and they are startled by Katia, an illegal immigrant. Ruby is moved by her resemblance to Sandra and Quentin, convinced that Ruby is going to abandon him for the girl, decides to help him anyway by putting yet another one of his own plans into action. He calls Vogel and creates a distraction by getting him to send his killers to him when he thinks Ruby has gone to Vogel's place. But Ruby comes back and saves Quentin from getting beaten up by the thugs.
Meanwhile, figuring that Ruby will eventually head back there, the police has placed Vogel's place under heavy surveillance, so that when Ruby and Quentin show up, pretending to be captured by Rocco and end up killing Vogel, they are finally captured by the cops. But by this time, their friendship has become concrete and indestructible.
