Le commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg n'aime pas le Printemps. Sa fiancée, Camille, prend du recul, et son absence coupe les ailes du commissaire, au moment où il en aurait le plus besoin : Quelque chose vient de tomber sur la capitale, une énigme porteuse de malédiction, qui pourrait bien virer au malheur, si on ne la résout pas fissa. D'étranges signaux se répandent sur les portes des immeubles de Paris, et des mots inquiétants, mystérieux, sont lâchés à la criée sur les marchés. Et puis arrive ce qu'Adamsberg redoutait : un premier mort, le corps noirci, le visage figé dans une grimace de terreur, les signes de la peste. Et c'était ça qu'annonçait l'énigme, le retour du terrible fléau, mais avec une sacrée variante, il semble que quelqu'un contrôle la maladie et la porte où il veut.

It’s the hottest day of the year when a couple (Antoine, an insurance clerk and Hélène, a successful lawyer) hit the road for a holiday destination towards the south of France to meet their children. The roads are packed with heavy holiday traffic and miles of gridlock is expected.

Antoine, annoyed by his wife’s running late, tries to cool himself with beer after beer. By the time they hit the road, he has topped the beers with whisky but tries to conceal his drunkenness. Traffic slows and tempers flare. Antoine accuses his wife of not treating him like a real man. At each forced crawl and stop they break into accusations. He takes random turns and continues drinking in small town bars and pubs. The roads are busy with holiday goers and the police. A brief radio announcement reveals that a dangerous killer has escaped prison. The couple continue quarrelling.

When she is temporarily left alone in the car and worried by Antoine’s inebriated state, Hélène decides to go her own way and to look for alternative transport. Finding her gone, Antoine panics for a moment, but soon settles back to enjoy himself like ‘a real man’. It’s a long night and every anonymous bar sign and neon light invites him for one more drink. He picks up a hitchhiker who turns out to be the escaped killer and who, unbeknown to him, already just encountered his wife.

The events start moving out of Antoine’s control and turn into a night of horror. The film climaxes the next day when he wakes up in the middle of nowhere and goes looking for his wife…

At the same time, Schiffer helps Nerteaux to solve his mystery. The link between the two is a right-wing organization called the Grey Wolves, which will lead all of them to Turkey for the explosive climax. Empire of the Wolves exerts the same grim fascination as The Crimson Rivers, a previous Jean-Christophe Grangé adaptation featuring Reno. While it marks a minor entry in the versatile actor's career, the gripping (if over-long) thriller ultimately belongs to Jover, whose Anna is as divided against herself as Anne Parillaud's La Femme Nikita. --Kathleen C.
