Based on the remarkable life of iconic French singer, poet, writer and actor Serge Gainsbourg, the film is a surreal and evocative record of Gainsbourg's youth growing up in 1940s Nazi-occupied Paris, when he was called Lucien Ginsberg, through to his transformation into the hard-living showman, enfant terrible and successful song-writer of the 50s and 60s (famous for his glamorous lovers including Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin), to his notoriety in the 70s and 80s. A visually and narratively innovative project that features special effects from the makers of Pan's Labyrinth, Gainsbourg is groundbreaking cinema. We glimpse the fantasy world that drove his inspiration, the women he loved and lost and most of all, the music that made him a legend. From the graphic imagination of Joann Sfar, Gainsbourg is musical bio-pic like nothing else seen before.

For Every Family, There is a Season

How much or how little are we obliged to honour the wishes of our parents after they're gone? This is the question posed by Olivier Assayas in his rueful and wise new film, the most internationally heralded of his career to date.

In Summer Hours, the divergent paths of three forty-something siblings collide after their mother (Edith Scob), heiress to her uncle's exceptional 19th century art collection, dies suddenly, leaving them to come to terms with themselves and their differences. Adrienne (Juliette Binoche) a successful New York designer, Frédéric (Charles Berling) an economist and university professor in Paris, and Jérémie (Jérémie Renier) a dynamic businessman in China, are forced to discuss the practical details concerning the collection: preserve or sell? Display, or protect? In doing so they must confront the end of childhood, their shared memories, background and unique vision of the future.

Every moment of this wonderful film is imbued with longing, joy, regret and illumination. Incisively written, superbly acted and boasting a delicately understated approach to the subject matter, Assayas' new film moves effortlessly through its narrative with all the grace of Renoir at the height of his powers.

During a time of war, Nina offered peace.

Starting in 1944 at the beginning of France's Liberation and progressing through to the 1960s, LA MAISON DE NINA tells the tale of the unsung heroes of the war: the people who dedicated their lives to helping the many orphaned children.

Due to the horrors of World War Two, countless children - many of whom were Jewish - were left without parents. During and immediately after the war many of these children found special homes, such as one run by the selfless and courageous Nina. Here, children of all ages are provided with the security and love they need to help them overcome their own torturous memories and the reality of their futures. But life at Nina's is not always tranquil, with the conflicts of the outside world often threatening to intrude.

Director Richard Dembo draws on his own memories of these "houses of hope" (where he went on summer vacation when he was a child) and the real-life Nina who inspired the script to create a story of hopeful optimism in a time of the deepest despair.

Berlin, 1970. Leopold (Bernard Giraudeau) is a 50-year-old businessman who has begun a very insular love affair with Franz (Malik Zidi) a 20 year-old toy boy who enjoys the attention and his dominance over his ever-pleasing lover. But as time evolves, obsession grows and finally their secluded tryst is destroyed when Franz's ex-girlfriend and leopold's ex-lover reappear, bringing them a collision of emotions and a sinful proposition.

François Ozon's Water Drops On Burning Rocks is a scathing examination of a suffocating relationship, and the consequence of love, obsession, and aggression. it is also a Queer classic. Based on a play by the late Rainer Werner Fassbinder (Querelle), one of cinema's great gay directors, who died in 1982 at age of 36, having completed an astonishing 40 films. ozon draws heavily from Fassbinder, setting this farce in a chic, art deco apartment and relying on tight camera work, impeccable acting and his skills as a film maker to set sparks flying.

Coco Avant Chanel: From rags to riches to Haute-Couture: the incredible story of Coco Chanel. In a remarkable tour de force portrayal, the lovely Audrey Tautou (Hunting and Gathering, Priceless, The Da Vinci Code) becomes the legendary style icon Coco Chanel. From her humble beginnings at a French country orphanage to the extravagant heights of Parisian society, Chanel's indomitable creative spirit was expressed as a dance hall singer, seamstress, social rebel and fashion icon. Benoit Poelvoorde and Alessandro Nivola portray the men of wealth and elegance infatuated with the multi-faceted Coco Chanel, whose vision and style - inspired by fashion and fueled by passion - paved a daring new way for modern women to look, dress and live their lives.

A very long engagement: The film is set in France near the end of World War I in the deadly trenches of the Somme, in the gilded Parisien halls of power, and in the modest home of an indomitable provincial girl. It tells the story of this young woman's relentless, moving and sometimes comic search for her fiancC)e, who has disappeared. He is one of five French soldiers believed to have been court-martialed under mysterious circumstances and pushed out of an allied trench into an almost-certain death in no-man's land. What follows is an investigation into the arbitrary nature of secrecy, the absurdity of war, and the enduring passion, intuition and tenacity of the human heart.

A phenomenal showcase of France’s most renowned actors relishing the challenges of an extraordinary narrative, A Christmas Tale reaches great heights of emotion thanks to the masterful direction by Arnaud Desplechin.
It’s Christmas in Roubaix, and a family get together is shaded by the recently diagnosed illness that threatens the life of Junon (Catherine Deneuve). Only a successful blood match with one of her children can save her, but a complex set of inter-relations in the family ensures nothing will be easy. Far from morbid, the tale is rich in black humour, and irony as the French do so very, very well.
This outrageous, funny and heart-rending romp through the dysfunction of the middle class was one of 2008’s most celebrated French films.

17-year-old Bilal has spent the last three months travelling illegally across Europe, in an attempt to reunite with his girlfriend Mina who has moved with her family to England. "The film effortlessly blends high farce, political satire and family drama into a magnificant piece of gold-plated entertainment. Bound to be one of the most delightful, funny and moving films of 2010."
Jim Schembri, The Age. Saturday April 24.

During the Brezhnev era, Andrei Filipov was a prodigy - the greatest conductor in the Soviet Union and he directed the famous Bolshoi Orchestra. But after refusing to expel his Jewish musicians, including his best friend Sacha, he was fired at the height of his glory. Thirty years later, he is still working at the Bolshoi, but... as a cleaner.
When Andrei intercepts a fax from the Theatre du Chatelet inviting the Bolshoi Orchestra to Paris, he comes up with a crazy idea: he'll gather up his old musician friends (now working rag-tag jobs), head to Paris and pretend to be the famed orchestra to play Tchaikovsky's "Violin Concerto." The long-awaited dream to deliver one final performance!
Opening at #1 at the French cinema box-office, The Concert is pure entertainment - a warm-hearted, joyous story filled with great wit and humanity. The stirring finale set against Tchaikovsky's Concerto is simply magnificent.

The Big Blue charts the competition and friendship between Jacques and Enzo first in their youth, and then when they meet again at the World Free Diving Championships in Sicily years later. A dreamy adolescent, Jacques (Jean-Marc Barr, Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark) has grown into a solitary man, caught between the solidity of the real world and the spiritual beckoning of "the big blue", and in particular the dolphins swimming below. He possesses a unique connection to the sea, the ability to slow his heartbeat and circulation on deep dives, a phenomenon previously only observed in whales and dolphins. Enzo (Jean Reno, Leon: The Professional, Ronin), however, has become the World Champion at his sport with a very different approach. Their rivalry reignited, the pair spur each other on to deeper and deadlier dives. Besson's first English language production is a story of extremes; of love and solitude, friendship and rivalry, life and death.

The moving true story of a simple housemaid who painted to appease the voice of heaven. In 1913, German art collector Wilhelm Uhde, the first Picasso buyer and discoverer of acclaimed naïve primitive painter Le Douanier Rousseau, rents a modest apartment in Senlis in order to leave behind the excesses of his Parisian life and concentrate on his writing. Once settled, he hires a cleaning lady, the 48 year old Séraphine de Senlis, a quiet and retiring woman with little regard for life beyond her means. But while visiting the home of a prominent local family, Uhde notices a small painting on wood and is surprised to discover that it was created by the unassuming Séraphine. A poignant and unexpected relationship then develops between the avant-garde art dealer and the visionary cleaning lady. Yolande Moreau delivers a multi-award winning performance as Séraphine de Senlis, a simple housekeeper whose brilliantly colourful canvases, to this day, adorn some of the most famous galleries in the world. Director Martin Provost’s fictionalised and tragic portrait of this forgotten painter is a moving and compelling testament to creativity and the resilience of one woman’s unique vision and spirit.
