So
Frenchy So Chic is released once a year. It has become a ‘French rendez
vous’ for the Australian community. It reached #9 in the ARIA Chart,
making it the first French-speaking album to reach such rank. It
showcases the latest music from France across an eclectic range of
genres.
It is the unofficial soundtrack to the French Film Festival who
gathers each year over 80,000 Francophiles nationally. (Number 1
Foreign Film Festival in Australia).
You’ll
be diving into 34 gems on two discs which bubble and fizz like
champagne knowing that they have been sourced to delight.
Like
the thrill of a treasure hunt, you’ll hear everything from a trippy
electro track called IRM by chanteuse and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg
(daughter to French god Serge) and the big and brassy
Broadwayesque-inspired Rocket to the Moon by Emilie Simon to delightful
francophones from the other side of the Atlantic.
Contrast
that with outspoken urban poet Ridan and post-punk Arab wildman Rachid
Taha – artists known for their indictments of racism in France – this
time offering up a pair of hopeful songs. Old faves Nouvelle Vague show
off an unreleased cover of Fad Gadget’s Under the Flag and you’ll even
be surprised by a few songs in English.
If you think chanson and the circus could not possibly go together, skip to Le Fils Cache du Pape by Babylon Circus (touring in Australia soon).
